Jaya (pronounced Jay- ah, not J-eye -ah) is a very loved 6 yr old (Bday is Oct 7) Aussie, Lab mix ` 45 lbs. She is located in Toronto East. She has been with us since she was a tiny puppy and who we need to rehome due to family health reasons. She is clicker trained and very responsive to training. She LOVES trail walks, camping, swimming, playing catch, canoeing, cottaging. She has almost unbreakable recall and is obsessed with catch (to the point we don't have balls in the house and only play it rarely outdoors so that she doesn't expect it on every outing). In this stage of our life she gets much less attention and exercise than in the past but she's adjusted well to new routines and has been fine with just short neighborhood walks and time cuddling.
Family of no children She loves her family and is exceptional with young children if introduced properly. She is not reactive to her human siblings screaming, climbing on her or pulling her tail etc. Despite this, we are only considering a home without children (and with no plans to have them in the future) for her because she is a dog that would most benefit from dedicated companionship and attention from 1 or 2 humans. Fine with other dogs She is fine with other dogs if introduced properly and has lived at diff times with older dogs, baby chihuahuas and even a horse ( due to work and family obligations we are out of the country occasionally and she has lived with friends and family or boarded with dog trainers). She is not a fan of smaller enclosed dog parks as they seem to cause her stress. She is much more interested in playing catch or trail walks and has no interest in playing with other dogs. She is fine with large dog parks like High Park and Cherry Beach but meeting other dogs would need to be carefully managed in the beginning. Personality Like many Aussies, she has anxieties and eccentricities that an experienced Aussie owner will be used to. All are quite manageable for someone who has the experience, time and energy to devote to her. She has only ever nipped on rare occasions that her anxieties were not managed carefully. She does not have a strong herding instinct, is not destructive, rarely barks, is housetrained and is happy to stay home alone for a few hours. She has attended puppy socialization classes and used to have regular visits to the dog park, doggy daycare and group dog adventures on nature trails since she was a young puppy. We have also had several private training lessons through When Hounds Fly. Her most significant anxieties are leash aggression and stranger danger but both are easily managed and we would only let her go to a home that will be committed to managing her needs so that they don't escalate into larger problems. New Home If you are an experienced Aussie owner, have no young children, no plans to have children in the future, and are looking for a loving companion whom you can help be her best self through training and attention, please contact us. We will only give her to a home perfectly suited to her and will ask for 2 personal references, 1 vet reference, a home visit and a donation to Aussie Rescue of Ontario.
